When I went to college, I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur. But, as I often joke, entrepreneurship requires two things: an idea & money. Both of which I didn’t have. I was fortunate enough, however, to have started my professional career in the insurance industry. While it’s far from the sexiest career path, it afforded me the two things I didn’t have in college (sort of).
The insurance industry has provided my family and I with a good living (money – check). More importantly, it provided me with not so much an entrepreneurial idea, but an outlet for me to become an entrepreneur – like owning an insurance agency (idea – check). Once those two things fell into place, it seemed like the most challenging part was behind me.
Boy was I wrong. There are new challenges every single day in creating, growing, and running your own business. Thankfully, I learned a lot of the things I needed in college and throughout my athletic career. However, I’m still constantly trying to learn new things to ensure that McHugh Insurance Group continues to grow.
Recently, I stumbled upon a resource that I felt was too valuable not to share. No, I’m not going to be giving away a college degree in starting a business. Fortunately, I don’t have to. Even if you have little to no education, there is a resource out there that offers just as much, if not more, value than any college experience can.
That resource is the Small Business Administration. More specifically, their Learning Center. After stumbling upon this, I dug in to see what all was available and I was shocked. The SBA offers almost 7 hours of COMPLETELY FREE video trainings on their website. In addition, they offer trainings and other valuable resources to help you start and run your business.
The content includes everything from writing a business plan, to launching your business, to managing and growing your business. I’ve included the link to the learning center below. For any aspiring entrepreneurs or current entrepreneurs, I would encourage you to take some time to check it out. Even if you have years of experience, I’m sure you will still find some value in it – I know I sure did.
