Summer Safety Tips for Outdoor Workers

Summer brings longer days and more job opportunities, but it also increases the risk of exposure to sun, heat, and insect-related hazards. For construction crews, landscapers, and utility workers, staying safe outside during the summer months requires planning, awareness, and the right protective gear.

Protecting Against Sun Exposure

Ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage skin and increase the risk of skin cancer. To reduce sun exposure:

  • Wear lightweight, tightly woven clothing that covers arms and legs
  • Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, and reapply as directed
  • Wear a hat that shields your neck, ears, and scalp
  • Use UV-absorbent sunglasses that block 99–100% of UVA and UVB rays

Heat Stress Prevention

The combination of heat and humidity can pose serious health risks, especially for workers doing physical labor. Prevent heat stress by:

  • Drinking water before feeling thirsty
  • Wearing breathable, dry-fit clothing
  • Eating small, light meals
  • Avoiding caffeine and sugary drinks
  • Being mindful that protective gear like respirators can increase heat stress

Supervisors should encourage frequent hydration and breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

Watch Out for Ticks and Insects

If your crew is working in wooded areas or tall grass, tick bites are a real concern. Ticks can carry Lyme disease and other illnesses. Encourage your team to:

  • Wear light-colored clothing to easily spot ticks
  • Tuck pants into socks or boots
  • Use insect repellents and wash work clothes at high heat
  • Check for ticks at the end of the day, especially behind the knees, underarms, and around the waistband

To reduce the risk of insect stings, avoid heavily scented products and always check bottles or cups before drinking, especially outdoors.

Protecting your team in the summer months starts with awareness. By following these practical tips, outdoor workers can stay safe, healthy, and productive all season long.
